Endothelins are endothelium-derived vasoconstrictor peptides. Endothelin 2, also known as ET-2, is a protein that in humans is encoded by the EDN2 gene. The secreted peptide (~2kD, 21 amino acids) is produced as a result of endothelin-2 precursor (~20 kD) processing and functions as a ligand for endothelin receptors which upon peptide binding modulates a wide array of cell signaling events. Diseases associated with endothelins include aortic disease and patent ductus arteriosus.
