Avermectin is a group of macrocyclic lactone compounds that are used as broad-spectrum anthelmintics, insecticides, and acaricides. These compounds are derived from the soil bacterium Streptomyces avermitilis and are commonly used in veterinary medicine to treat parasitic infections in livestock and pets. Avermectin compounds work by binding to glutamate-gated chloride ion channels in the nervous system of parasites, causing paralysis and death. Avermectin compounds have also been found to have potential as a treatment for certain human diseases, such as river blindness and lymphatic filariasis.
