Sterigmatocystin is a toxic secondary metabolite produced by certain species of fungi, including Aspergillus versicolor and Aspergillus nidulans. It is closely related to aflatoxin, another fungal toxin, and has been shown to have carcinogenic and mutagenic properties. Sterigmatocystin is commonly found in contaminated grains and nuts, and can also be present in feed for livestock.
