5-formylcytosine is an oxidized derivative of 5-methylcytosine, a type of DNA methylation. 5-formylcytosine is a nucleobase analogue with a cytosine that possesses a hydrogen at position 5 that has been replaced by a formyl group. 5-methylcytosine is oxidized to 5-hydroxymethylcytosine which is then oxidized to 5-formylcytosine and later to 5-carboxylcytosine. These oxidations are catalyzed by the Ten-Eleven Translocation (TET) enzyme family. 5-formylcytosine has been shown to determine nucleosome organization and plays a role in regulating transcription.
