For direct ELISA, a 1:10,000 dilution detects 2 µg coating of Botulinum Toxin A. For Western blot, the recommended dilution to probe 0.5 µg of unreduced holotoxin or heavy chain is 1:2000.
Clostridium botulinum is a gram-positive, anaerobic motile bacteria normally found in soil. C. botulinum is a potential threat to both humans and animals through contaminated food because of the potent neurotoxin they produce. C. botulinum bacteria are categorized within 7 strains A-G based on the characteristics of their toxin. A,B, E and F strains are known to cause food poisoning in humans.
