Specificity: nucleolus and Cajal bodies in interphase cells. The antigen is a constitutively expressed nucleolar component and a specific marker for the dense fibrillar component of the interphase nucleolus. The protein recognized is a 180 kD polypeptide in Xenopus (xNopp180), homologue to the rat polypeptide (Nopp140). When applied at high concentration to human cells the antibody reacts with a nucleolar component which, however, does not correspond to xNopp180.
Related to nucleologenesis, may play a role in the maintenance of the fundamental structure of the fibrillar center and dense fibrillar component in the nucleolus. It has intrinsic GTPase and ATPase activities. May play an important role in transcription catalyzed by RNA polymerase I.
