Lithium (Li) metal and solid-state batteries are considered promising candidates for next-generation battery technology. Here, by using advanced characterization techniques, such as cryo-electron microscopy/cryo-focused ion beam (cryo-EM/cryo-FIB), spectroscopy, and titration gas chromatography, the evolving nanostructure of Li deposits within Li-metal batteries during nucleation and growth process was revealed. Insights on phase fraction of solid electrolyte interphases (SEI) and electrochemical deposited Li were gained. In addition, the application of cryo-EM is extended to the study of solid-state batteries and even to directly probe the liquid electrolyte–electrode interface within a coin cell. A few new perspectives about how advanced diagnostic techniques to accelerate the innovation of novel energy storage materials and architectures will also be discussed.
