Oleg Krokhin, Assistant Professor, University of Manitoba
Dr. Oleg Krokhine is an Assistant Prof. at the University of Manitoba in Department of Internal Medicine. His first acquaintance with chromatography goes back 36 years, when he read about it in popular science book, and continued through his university and post-graduate years. Dr. Krokhine’s specialty was inorganic ion-exchange separations, known now as ion chromatography. Learning mass-spectrometry and proteomics (from 2000 at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Canada) has been a new challenge, experience, which changed his career and overall view on the analytical chemistry’s development. He decided to study peptide separation chemistry through development of peptide retention prediction models in 2002 with an idea to find a second constraint (retention time), which will aid mass-spectrometry driven peptide identification. His Sequence-Specific Retention Calculator model has been a benchmark tool in this field since 2004. In addition to the most popular proteomic applications (reversed-phase HPLC), today it covers a variety of peptide separation techniques: HILIC, strong anion and cation exchange, capillary zone electrophoresis). Application of fundamental chromatographic knowledge to high-content retention data derived by proteomics techniques has been a key to his success
