Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) arrays can measure tens of thousands of SNP targets, where tandem repeat assays usually have several orders of magnitude fewer markers. This difference gives Applied Biosystems Axiom microarray results a much greater resolution and allows for verification of pedigrees and the genetic health of companion animals such as dogs, cats, and horses. The Axiom portfolio allows you to genotype entire animal populations, facilitating more tailored veterinary care and helping inform breeding efforts.
Hear how Dr. Karlsson, Assistant Professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, has successfully identified genes related to canine obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) in Doberman pinschers. Canine OCD is highly heritable, making it an ideal candidate for genomic research. Dr. Karlsson and her colleagues used gene arrays to compare Dobermans with and without OCD symptoms and identified a gene also implicated in human OCD whose protein product stabilizes connections between glutaminergic neurons.
Canine research is an important part of many research and testing laboratories, as dogs are particularly well-suited to addressing certain questions relevant to human diseases and behavioral patterns.
Dogs have extremely high phenotypic plasticity compared to other mammals, leading to huge differences in size, behavior, body shape, and disease susceptibility between breeds. This diversity makes them ideal subjects for research surrounding the genetic bases of various skeletal and muscular conditions. Dogs have also been bred for thousands of years to respond to human social cues, making them useful for research into the genetic underpinnings of behavior. Additionally, canine diets are similar enough to human diets that dogs provide insight into dietary and metabolic conditions that other lab animals cannot.
Our catalog array-based genotyping solutions are ideal for the identification, validation, and screening of complex genetic traits in plants and animals. Choose from our wide variety of predesigned arrays.
These low-, medium-, and high-density arrays offer the power and resolution for a wide range of applications in plant and animal breeding and genomics. These applications include studying marker-trait association, evaluating elite lines, and identifying multi-line reference populations, as well as research applications for genome wide analysis and selective sweep analysis studies.

Axiom myDesign custom Arrays give you the power to develop an effective array for genome-wide association, replication, fine mapping, and candidate gene studies in any species.
With Axiom myDesign custom genotyping arrays, fully- or semi-customized arrays containing 300 to 2.6 million markers can be designed. Use variants you provide, or choose SNPs from our Axiom Genomic Database, the world's largest resource of genotype-tested SNPs.
Multiple-species arrays are supported without any restriction on number of markers per species.
