Global ice memory initiative: understanding climate change

Global ice memory initiative – understanding climate change

According to NASA, Earth's current warming trend is proceeding at a rate that is unprecedented in the past 1,300 years. Ancient evidence of climate change, and how humans have impacted it, can be found in ice cores drawn from Greenland, Antarctica and tropical mountain glaciers.

In an effort to enable scientists to conduct research on these ice cores, Thermo Fisher has partnered with the ICE MEMORY initiative. The mission of ICE MEMORY is to extract and store ice cores from the mountain glaciers that are most vulnerable to climate change, providing future generations of scientists with vital samples to study and better understand environments and climate change.

Glacial core detail
"The ice in mountain glaciers holds the memory of the region's climate and environment, and understanding past climates is central to understanding future change."
–Patrick Lévy, President, Fondation Université Grenoble Alpes
"The ICE MEMORY initiative is an ambitious and exciting endeavor that will allow scientists and future generations to better understand our environments, climates, and their evolution. We are honored to be a partner and proud to play a role in this important initiative."
–Jakob Gudbrand, President, Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry Division

Monitoring gas species with gas analyzers

The dramatic fall of oil prices has forced oil companies to think over their processes and improve their efficiency, reduce waste, and prevent oil spills. Loccioni, a company focused on the development of measurement and control automatic systems for environmental monitoring, has moved into the field of environmental and process monitoring to develop gas monitoring systems. These systems integrate our FT-IR technology to measure up to 50 gas species.

"We successfully applied GCS technology for monitoring emissions in power plants, waste incinerators, cement plants, steel plants, glass making chemical plants…Wherever our customers will be, we will be there with them. And Thermo [Fisher] will be there with us facing the future challenges in process and gas monitoring."
–Stefano Collura, R&D Manager, Loccioni Group

Keeping local water districts safe in Santa Clara Valley

The Santa Clara Valley Water District is continually testing raw source water, treated water from treatment plants, and, lately, recycled water. It is responsible for providing cleaner and safer water by adhering to federal- and state-mandated testing down to the parts per trillion level for organic compounds such as pesticides and herbicides.

"Our job is to prove continuously that there isn’t anything in the water…even at very low detection limits."
–Beau Sullivan, Senior Organic Chemist, Santa Clara Valley Water District

One continuous pursuit: our commitment to sustainability

At Thermo Fisher Scientific, our mission to enable our customers to make the world healthier, cleaner and safer drives our commitment to sustainability. We aren't just delivering products that serve the research needs of our customers, we are striving to develop them in a way that minimizes our use of natural resources and our impact on the environment. In our sustainable product design program we are taking a new look at how we design our products, and looking for ways to reduce health and environmental impacts across a product's lifecycle.
