Vegetable Peptones

There has been a growing concern over the use of meat- and animal-derived products in the pharmaceutical industry since the emergence of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) in the mid 1980s. Subsequent worries about transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) in other species has accelerated the demand for animal-free materials.

Despite a strict policy of sourcing animal materials from countries where BSE is not known, and tight regulation and certification of all raw materials, Thermo Fisher Scientific have recognized the need for a range of meat-free products for use within the pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical industries.

This has led to the development of a range of Veggietones—using plant-derived materials as an alternative to traditional peptones to provide a highly nutritious general purpose range of media for the growth of bacteria and fungi. Pea flour is used as a protein source and fungal enzymes are used to make the peptone.

In particular, the introduction of a well defined cold filterable pea vegetable peptone, either as an irradiated dehydrated culture medium or as ready to use broth in bioprocess containers for aseptic process control (media fills) has been welcomed and is being widely adopted across the industry.

No raw materials of animal origin have been used in the manufacture of these products.

All our raw materials have been certified as free of genetically modified material.
