Vaginal infections: Get the Facts

Vaginitis is infection or inflammation of the vagina, and may cause discharge, itching, and pain.  The most common types are bacterial vaginosis (BV), vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC), and trichomonal vaginitis (TV). Vaginitis is one of the most common medical problems for which women seek healthcare.

Diagnosing the cause of vaginitis can be difficult. The signs and symptoms of the main causes of BV, VVC, and TV are very similar and overlapping. A definitive diagnosis can rarely be made based on symptoms alone, and differentiation is required as the treatments differ.

PCR testing has high sensitivity and specificity, allowing for the identification of the pathogens associated with vaginitis. It offers more accurate detection than alternative testing methods. It has the best overall performance and can simultaneously test for all relevant pathogens [1].
