Groundwater Analysis

Explore our groundwater analysis solutions

Water is a precious resource, we need to ensure our water supplies are maintained

To monitor groundwater levels, we commonly use pressure from which level can be derived. This can also be coupled with water quality instrumentation to measure the physical parameters of the monitoring bore.

Whether you are looking at short-term use or an extended deployment, there is a tailored solution that can be customised for every application.

Level loggers

The In-Situ range of level loggers is designed for long-term deployment and are of a corrosion-resistant titanium construction. The economical Rugged TROLL 100 is an absolute pressure sensor with options of 0–9 m, 0–30 m, and 0–76 m.

The Level TROLL series has the option of absolute and gauged pressure to 693 m, with the addition of open communication protocols allowing for easy integration into PLCs, SCADA systems, and telemetry instrumentation.

Absolute versus gauged sensors

Absolute (non-vented)

Advantages

  • Maintenance free system
  • Can be deployed via a direct read or stainless cable
  • For clustered wells, the data from one BaroTROLL can post correct multiple data logger files

Accuracy

Accurate with minimal maintenance

This measures all pressure forces detected by the strain gauge, including atmospheric pressure. The back of an absolute pressure sensor is completely sealed from the atmosphere. The front of the absolute pressure sensor responds to both atmospheric pressure as well as the pressure head of water above the sensor and cannot differentiate between the two. Therefore, the absolute system requires a BaroTROLL to monitor atmospheric data.

Gauged (vented)

Advantages

  • Highest accuracy
  • No post correction required
  • Deployed via direct read cable with vent tube

Accuracy

Highest accuracy

This eliminates the effects of atmospheric pressure since the vent tube in the vented cable allows atmospheric pressure to be applied to the back of the pressure sensor. There is no post correction needed, but the user must ensure the vent tube of the cable is venting properly and that the desiccant systems are periodically replaced.

Low-flow sampling

There are different sampling techniques involved when retrieving a sample from a well, including passive samplers like hydrasleeves or passive diffusion bags for VOCs, bailers, or portable/dedicated low-flow sampling and 12-volt pumping options.

Our range of bladder pumps for both low-flow portable and dedicated pump systems are used in a variety of locations from Uranium mines, CSG to installations in general sites located in CBDs.

These pumps have been used at some of the deepest sampling sites in the world and have recovered samples from over 1,600 m below ground.

QED Micropurge pumps

The QED range of low-flow sampling options offers reduced cross-contamination due to easily field-replaceable bladders. The bladder system stops the potential of cross-contamination from drive gas and additionally reduces volatile loss. QED systems have fully pneumatic options available for hazardous zone work.

Portable pumps

The QED Sample Pro portable pump delivers highly accurate samples in an easy-to-use design and can run dry without causing damage.

Advantages:
  • Highest sample accuracy and precision, especially for sensitive VOCs and dissolved metals
  • High reliability, long service life with no-wear components
  • Not affected by silt and sand or run-dry operation, no heating
  • Totally PFC free

Dedicated pumps

The QED Well Wizard range range of pneumatic bladder pumps operate via cycles of compressed air that squeeze the flexible bladder to displace and release water from the pump, then allow the pump to refill by submergence with minimal disruption of the sample chemistry.

Advantages:
  • No overheating of high-speed electric pump motors, which can alter samples and ruin the pumps
  • No churning action, like that of bailers or inertial-lift samplers that increase turbidity
  • No suction to cause degassing of dissolved volatile contaminants
  • Sample location consistency and repeatability

Water quality instrumentation

The In-Situ range of water quality instrumentation includes options of fixed sensors and sondes that can be completely customised depending on the application.

The In-Situ range of level and water quality instrumentation consists of a shared ecosystem of cabling, communication, and software. The Vu-Situ application is available on Android and iOS devices and is free to download on the application store.

Conductivity/temperature/depth loggers

The In-Situ Aqua TROLL 100 measures conductivity and temperature, and the In-Situ Aqua TROLL 200 has the added option of absolute or gauged pressure measurements.

As with all In-Situ instrumentation, the Aqua TROLL 100 and 200 have open architecture, allowing easy integration into PLCs, SCADA, dataloggers, and telemetry systems.

Multiparameter sondes

In-Situ has a multiparameter sonde for every application and budget. The Aqua Troll 400 is an entry level sonde which measures temperature and pressure and utilises a fixed temperature/conductivity combination sensor and optical dissolved oxygen and has a field replaceable pH/ORP sensor.

The Aqua TROLL 500 and 600 can be customised to your application and are suitable for short-term spot checking or long-term deployments.

Both instruments can measure the standard parameter set of pH/ORP, optical dissolved oxygen, temperature, conductivity, and turbidity as well as ISEs for nutrient monitoring and fluorometers such as Chlorophyll, Rhodamine and Phycocyanin (BGA-PC), and Phycoerythrin (BGA-PE).

The Bluetooth TROLL comm is compatible with Android and iOS devices and includes a barometric pressure sensor and an expected battery life of 80 hours.

Water level meters

Water level meters are used to determine standing water levels generally from a set datum.

There are a variety of different meters available with varying features such as sensitivity, auto-winding and conductivity profiling, and brand preference.

Solinst 122 interface meters

Interface meters are used to determine both light, non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPLs) and dense, non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) in groundwater. Many tape options are available.

Solinst 107 TLC meters

Temperature, level, and conductivity (TLC) meters have increased in popularity due to the increase in requirement to profile wells for conductivity.

Solinst carry bags

Padded nylon carrying bags are available, as optional extras. The bag design has a convenient shoulder strap, zippered front pocket, zippered top, and a grommet in the base to prevent moisture build-up.
