Live nerve terminals of motorneurons that innervate a rat lumbrical muscle stained with the activity-dependent dye, FM® 1-43 (Cat. nos. T3163, T35356) and observed under low magnification. The dye molecules, which insert into the outer leaflet of the surface membrane, are captured in recycled synaptic vesicles of actively firing neurons. The image was contributed by William J. Betz, University of Colorado School of Medicine.
