Swine respiratory diseases have a significant impact around the world and are responsible for proven important productivity losses in pig herds. Often, multiple infectious agents are involved: virus, bacteria, mycoplasma, and parasites are all potential causes. These infectious agents act together to increase the severity and duration of the disease. Farmers, veterinarians, and veterinary diagnostic labs have to work together to identify the agents involved. Regularly submitting samples to a diagnostic laboratory will help farmers and veterinarians keep up to date with what’s going on in an operation or herd.
ELISA tests and real-time PCR tests provide complementary information about an infection. A combination of ELISA tests (for antibodies detection) and real-time PCR tests (for pathogen detection), when used at the right time in the disease's progression, can give veterinarians and farmers a more complete picture of the infection. This can help them detect disease earlier and make management decisions much faster on the farm to stop the spread of disease and, ultimately, save money.
In some countries, depending on the prevalence of diseases, other pathogens can be involved in swine respiratory diseases, such as classical swine fever virus or pseudorabies virus.
PRRS is a highly contagious disease caused by a virus belonging to the Arterivirus family. The PRRS virus is a small (50–60 nm), enveloped RNA virus with at least two different membrane proteins at its surface. The virus causes respiratory and influenza-like symptoms as well as fertility problems, abortion, and the birth of runts.
PRRS is one of the most economically damaging diseases for the pig industry and is spread throughout the world, affecting domesticated pigs in particular.
Thermo Fisher Scientific develops unique diagnostic schemes for PRRSV, with sampling, sample preparation tools, and workflows for real-time PCR and ELISAs.

Enzootic pneumoniae, caused by Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, occurs worldwide and causes a chronic infectious pneumonia in pigs that is characterized by a persistent dry cough, decreased growth rate, and sporadic respiratory distress.
VetMAX M. hyopneumoniae real-time PCR reagents and controls allow rapid screening for the presence of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae. M. hyo. can be a significant economic burden, particularly when swine influenza virus (SIV) or porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) are endemic.

Influenza A is a zoonosis that poses a threat to human and animal health worldwide. SIV is a highly contagious viral infection in pigs caused by a variety of closely related influenza A viruses. These viruses are noted for their ability to create new strains such as H1 N1, H1 N2, and H3 N2. An outbreak is typically preceded by 1–3 individual cases and then spreads rapidly within a herd, mainly by aerosolization (coughing, nasal discharge) and pig-to-pig contact. Accurately monitoring and detecting exposure is critical in preventing its spread.
Real-time PCR screening and subtyping kits are used for the rapid detection of swine influenza virus (SIV). VetMAX-Gold SIV solutions are rapid, easy-to-use real-time PCR screening and subtyping kits that detectinfluenza virus in pigs with superior sensitivity, specificity, repeatability, and reproducibility.
The PrioCHECK Swine Influenza Ab Serum Plate Kit is an indirect ELISA used for the detection of antibodies against swine type A Influenza, detecting all H and N subtypes. This kit primarily recognizes antibodies to matrix and nucleocapsid proteins specific to Influenza type A. It’s principally used for control rather than diagnosis; serological screening, decrease of MDA for vaccination, and control of vaccination.

PCV2 is a DNA virus classified in the Circovirus genus of the Circoviridae family. This virus is now recognized as the main infectious agent involved in the development of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). PCV2 is mainly excreted in the feces and urine, but is also found in bronchial and nasal secretions. Its transmission is mainly horizontal through healthy carriers and sick animals. PMWS is found throughout the world (in many countries in Europe, North America, and Asia) and causes heavy economic losses due to its impact on breeding performance.
The VetMAX Porcine PCV2 quantitative real-time PCR kit enables you to detect and quantify the presence of PCV2 virus in the sample, and the presence of the internal endogenous positive control (IPC), which validates the purification of the sample and avoids false negative results.
