System Hardware

Connect Edge

Connect Edge helps you do more with less upfront expense, less hardware and less worry. Connect Edge system hardware comprises gateways and palm-size device adapters that collect vital information from your lab equipment or devices. Device adapters are both Wi-Fi and Ethernet capable, so you get to decide how information is transmitted from device to gateway**. Connect Edge can enable connectivity for 10 or more devices*, further reducing overhead expenses and the amount of hardware to manage and keep track of.

 

Once you decide how you want to connect, you get to choose where you want your data to go. Connect Edge utilizes InstrumentConnect cloud remote monitoring in the Thermo Fisher Cloud and can also be set up as an OPC server to send device data to your own cloud or premise-based system via OPC UA.

Get Connected


Connect Edge is a professional-grade solution that can meet the needs of small and large operations. If you are monitoring up to 10 devices, your device adapters can communicate directly to your Connect Edge gateway via Wi-Fi for faster set-up and less hassle from your IT department. For larger operations, or if your devices are spread out across a large campus or building, you can increase range significantly by choosing to have adapters communicate with your gateway via Ethernet or Wi-Fi.

  1. Determine type (Ethernet only/Wi-Fi and Ethernet) and quantity of gateway(s) needed based on network topology preference.
  2. Select compatible device adapter for your lab equipment.
  3. Purchase an InstrumentConnect Monitor or Integrate subscription for each device.

Connect Edge adapters collect critical reliability parameters and can communicate with gateways directly or on a local network for greater flexibility.
 

*Each gateway connects 10 devices. Additional capacity is determined by device type and telemetry transmitted and is determined after initial set-up.

Data Security

At Thermo Fisher Scientific, security and privacy is our highest priority. To ensure the highest levels of protection and security against any compromise to your data, the Thermo Fisher Connect Platform was built using Thermo Fisher Scientific's Cybersecurity Program, on the industry-leading Amazon Web Services™ (AWS) cloud-computing platform.

 

With AWS, all your data is stored in highly secure data centers managed by dozens of compliance programs and audit safeguards, as described below.

 

Data encryption

Our data storage system applies robust security standards including Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 256-bit encryption and physical safeguards. Additional protection layers, such as encryption using HTTPS/SSL with a 2048-bit Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate, help protect your data transmission from being intercepted during transfer. These security measures at the transport layer (Transport Layer Security, TLS) are like those employed by leading institutions, including the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

 

Network firewalls

The Connect Platform infrastructure services hosted by AWS are securely partitioned from any public access in a virtual private cloud (Amazon VPC) environment, with logical firewalls that restrict unauthorized access without appropriate credentials.

 

Scheduled audits

Security vulnerability assessments and data integrity tests are conducted on a regular basis to ensure that your data has not been compromised or altered in any way. Additionally, third-party security experts conduct ongoing systems audits, penetration, and preventive hacking tests.

 

Data backup and recovery

The Connect Platform follows robust industry standards for data backup and disaster recovery. It uses an AWS data center that has achieved SSAE 16–certification and has published a Service Organization Control 1 (SOC 1®) report. The SSAE 16 certificate verifies controls and processes, as well as design and operating effectiveness. Customer data is retained indefinitely if an account is in “active” status.

 

Data sharing

Collaboration and data sharing are secure and provide controls not available when sharing with common vehicles such as hard drives, portable drives and email. With the Connect Platform, only the data owner or admin can initiate sharing. Files and folders can be quickly shared from the file browser. For greater control, data sharing groups enable sharing with granular controls over who has access and their permissions on the files within the group.
