Testing for Vibrio in a commercial laboratory can bring with it many challenges. Confirmations can be difficult and time-consuming, leading to long turnaround times that are detrimental and frustrating for the customer. In Australia, demand for Vibrio testing has historically been low compared to other pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella. Testing has typically been for imported products, specific retailer requirements or foodborne illness investigations.

Recent verification testing with PCR methodology has brought forward some surprising results and has also identified exciting prospects to make Vibrio testing more analyst-friendly, with less chance of error or unreportable results and ultimately with improved turnaround times to benefit the industry.

This presentation has been prepared by drawing from the first-hand knowledge of food microbiologists with a long history of working with Vibrio in various commercial laboratories. Data will be presented to demonstrate the types of samples tested, where positive results have occurred and a comparison of time to confirmed result for existing culture / MPN methodologies compared to PCR.

Daniele is coordinating the scientific interaction with research scientists, laboratory and food safety managers, as well as the relationship with food safety authorities and certification bodies. She is responsible for developing the global food certification strategies and ensuring the recognition of Thermo Fisher Scientific solutions in food protection.

Daniele has certainly coordinated more than 100 validation studies of alternative methods according to the ISO 16140 standard and AOAC Guidelines. Daniele is as a member of the Board of Director of AOAC International, and more recently she joined the Expert Review Panel on Microbiology Methods for Food and Environmental Surfaces and the Official Methods Board (OMB) of Directors. Daniele is an active member of both MicroVal general and technical committees. She is as well a member of the AFNOR committees.

Daniele is strongly involved in international standardization with AOAC and ISO, and she is used to convene working groups or projects.

She was the President of IAFP Europe in 2018 and has organized multiple international symposia and conferences. She has published more than 45 publications and run more than 75 international communications. Daniele has also been involved in more than 20 national and European R&D programs.
