Thermo Fisher Scientific Microscopy Imaging Contest

Send us your microscopy image for the chance to win USD1,000 worth of cell imaging dye and reagent

We know you have worked hard on your experiments and have selected only the best images for publication. But what about all those other images, sitting in your notebooks and stored in your archives? Wouldn’t you like everyone to see your beautiful work?

Let us help you! We invite you to participate in our microscope cell imaging contest.

Upload your most colorful, unique, or creative images.

Microscopy imaging contest overview

Contestants are asked to submit images that have been captured with a microscope that can detect fluorescent dyes. Recipients will be selected by a panel of judges. Applicants will be primarily judged based on the esthetics of the image and secondarily judged on the use of imaging reagents and instrumentation.

Contestants will receive the large coloring poster with a set of markers, the winner will receive a prize of USD$1,000 worth of Invitrogen reagent products from a selected list to help with future imaging experiments.

Requirements to enter the contest:

  • Imaging experiment and data capturing be completed by you and not published elsewhere
  • A PNG, JPG, or TIFF of your image. You can submit up to three images
  • Details of the experiment including antibodies, reagents, and microscopes
  • Enter our contest by filling out the web form by 30 Sept 2024

Tips for creating beautiful images

Start looking through your notebook, old slides, or plates in you cell culture incubator for ideas on what experiments captures your attention. Old data is a good way to find a starting point. This contest can give your data a second chance to share it with a wider audience.

Find a good subject

Monocultures, mixed cell cultures, organoids, and small organisms like C. elegans are all great subjects. Framing the image to have distinction between background and the subject will help create interest. Very black or white backgrounds helps the subject to stand-out. Draw attention to certain cell populations by creating crisp lines with staining the cell membrane (e.g., CellMask Plasma Membrane DeepRed Stain, Cat. No. C10046) or F-actin filaments (e.g., ActinGreen 488 ReadyProbes Reagent, Cat. No. R37110).

Play around the objectives and filters

Sometimes taking a sample and capturing the image with different magnifications can create a sense of depth and allows viewers to mentally explore an image. Or try taking your image in brightfield and overlay it with your fluorescent channels for a different visual appeal.

Add color

Fluorescent dyes can bring a vibrant range of colors to images. Select and combine different dyes to add depth and create stunning and eye-catching images.

Imaging tools

Use the tools below to help you plan your imaging experiments.

Fluorescence Spectraviewer

Supports all levels of experimental complexity, use the tool to compare excitation and emission spectra of fluorophores and reagents.

Stain-iT Cell Staining Simulator

Visualize staining your cell without wasting your reagents, antibodies, or time.

Imaging protocol handbook

Protocols that fit your needs in imaging ranging from sample and assay preparation to staining, labeling, and data analysis strategies.

This event is open to customers from Singapore, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia. Participants who successfully upload their work and complete all required information will receive a participation gift, which includes a large coloring poster and a set of markers. There will be only one ultimate winner selected, who will have the opportunity to choose Thermo Fisher Scientific products worth up to USD 1,000 from a designated product list. Participants are allowed to submit up to three images, and all entries uploaded by September 30, 2024, will be considered for eligibility.
