Dosage dictates the poison

In 1998, arsenic poisoning in Japan made headlines when curry mixed with arsenic was served at a festival leading to 63 deaths. Cases of pesticide poisoning upon consumption of various farm products hit the newsstand almost every day. These toxic compounds may not be harmful to humans at low quantities but continuous exposure or ingestion in large amounts could lead to death. Toxic metals and metalloid compounds are typically not metabolized in the human body and hence would require elemental speciation and isotopic determination for better documentation of fatalities in forensic toxicology.

In addition, isotopic ratios may be useful to confirm the source of exposure. We offer solutions to aid in understanding the relationship between toxic concentration and its effect on the human body.
