X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) is a preferred method for monitoring specific elements in ambient particulate matter collected on filters in residential, industrial, and recreational areas. Our XRF instrumentation is an ideal method to determine concentrations of multiple elements in a single sampling run.
XRF is also a preferred method for qualitative and quantitative analysis of sediments, soils, sludge, and slurry samples with minimal sample preparation. Able to identify a wide range of elements, particularly heavy metals and other hazardous elements, XRF instruments facilitate the automated analysis of multiple samples at concentrations of a few ppm to % w/w.
Learn why the X-ray Fluorescence is the preferred technique for both air monitoring and soil analysis.
A non-destructive laboratory technique, energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) spectrometry, uses an X-ray source to irradiate a sample. As all elements consist of electrons orbiting a nucleus, when energized some electrons will be ejected (fluoresced) from the atom. To stabilize, the atom pulls electrons from outer shells into the vacated orbit. This action creates X-ray energy of a specific voltage. Measuring that X-ray energy (characteristic X-ray) identifies the fluoresced element.
The Thermo Scientific ARL QUANT’X EDXRF Spectrometer provides the analysis of elements from sodium to americium with minimal sample preparation. A powerful X-ray tube and optimized geometry enable EDXRF sensitivity for laboratory use. Advanced silicon drift X-ray detection enables high-resolution spectroscopy at high count rates. The ARL QUANT’X Spectrometer features a versatile sample chamber that can accommodate filter sizes from 25 mm to 47 mm in diameter for non-destructive analysis.
For busy environmental and industrial laboratories that need greater XRF performance, wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer is preferred.
The Thermo Scientific ARL PERFORM'X Sequential X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometer is an advanced platform designed for rapid and precise analysis of up to 90 elements in nearly any solid or liquid sample. The spectrometer is capable of analyzing up to 60 samples per hour with ultimate WDXRF sensitivity and precision. It features a goniometer that can be programmed to analyze specific elements (quantitative analysis) or to scan the X-ray spectrum to detect elements present in a given sample (qualitative analysis). The ARL PERFORM’X uses 9 diffracting crystals and collimators to achieve the ultimate in XRF resolution.
