Dialyzed FBS is manufactured using a process that significantly reduces the concentrations of small (low molecular weight) molecules such as amino acids, hormones, and cytokines while avoiding the precipitation of serum proteins.
Dialyzed fetal bovine serum is recommended for special applications where the normal concentrations of small molecules in FBS may be of concern, for example, in studies requiring higher levels of control over certain small molecules in the cell culture environment.
Whereas standard FBS will contain higher concentrations of small molecules (e.g., amino acids, hormones, cytokines), the careful filtration process used to produce dialyzed FBS greatly reduces the concentrations of these molecules, facilitating more precise control of nutrients and cell signaling molecules in the cell culture medium.
Watch to discover how the depletion of small molecules in dialyzed FBS allows researchers to control for molecules of interest in their cell culture experiments.
