Pushing the Frontiers of Mass Spectrometry

To answer challenging biological questions, mass spectrometry (MS) must rise to the challenge of achieving unprecedented throughput with comprehensive coverage of complex samples. With analysis time reduced to several minutes by fast liquid separations, confident identification, and quantitation over many orders of dynamic range requires a generational leap in mass spectrometry performance. The Thermo Scientific Astral analyzer is a novel class of high-resolution accurate-mass analyzer that compliments the Thermo Scientific Orbitrap analyzer to provide high speed and sensitivity measurements.

This webinar explores the underlying technology of the Orbitrap Astral mass spectrometer and the application to life science research.

Rethink what is possible with a mass spectrometer including:

  • the analysis of 300 proteomics samples per day
  • measuring 5,000 proteins from a true single-cell
  • collecting fragmentation data on over 90% of compounds in metabolomics experiments.

About the presenters

Dr. Alexander Makarov, Director, Global Research LSMS, Thermo Fisher Scientific

Alexander is the director of global research for the life sciences mass spectrometry team at Thermo Fisher Scientific. He led the team that developed the Orbitrap and Astral analyzers. He received the American Society for Mass Spectrometry Distinguished Contribution in Mass Spectrometry Award in 2008. He has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed papers and hold more than 250 patents.

Dr. Hamish Stewart, Staff Scientist, Analytical Instruments Group, Thermo Fisher Scientific

Hamish is the lead scientist for the Orbitrap Astral mass spectrometer development project. After receiving a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Nottingham in 2011, he started his professional career with Shimadzu where he developed new ion traps and time of flight mass spectrometers. In 2015 he joined Thermo Fisher Scientific to begin working on the Orbitrap Astral mass spectrometer.
