Precipitates in steel are known to improve properties by grain refinement and precipitation hardening. Until now, chemical analysis of these nanoscale particles has been performed manually, where the challenge has been to quickly obtain meaningful statistics on distribution of size, shape and chemistry. In this tutorial an electron microscopy workflow is presented where the acquisition of images and chemical information is fully automated, allowing for overnight, unattended analysis of large areas. A demonstration of this automated characterization is shown on a carbon replica of niobium and titanium microalloyed steel.
