The focus of the Schmitt-Ulms laboratory at the University of Toronto is the development of models and methods for studying proteins that cause neurodegenerative diseases, with the goal of generating insights that will lead to novel angles for diagnosis or intervention
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects 1% of people over age 60 and more than 5 million people worldwide. PD results from the selective loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra region of the brain. The loss of these neurons initially affects movement. As the disease progresses, however, cognitive function is impaired, and late-stage disease is often accompanied by dementia.
