E-Gel Power Snap Systems are compact benchtop instruments that have integrated nucleic acid electrophoresis and gel imaging functionalities. The instrument has two main components: the instrument device base and the camera to capture gel images. The instrument works with precast E-Gel agarose gels, which are buffer-less gels containing SYBR safe DNA stains, and ladders. This eliminates the need to pour gels, prepare buffers, and handle toxic dyes such as ethidium bromide.

The components of the E-Gel Power Snap systems are designed to save time and streamline the nucleic acid electrophoresis workflow. This system facilitates a simple three-step workflow: load, run, and analyze (Figure 1).

Advantages of E-Gel electrophoresis device and imaging systems

The two models of the E-Gel Precast Agarose Gel Electrophoresis Systems, including the Power Snap and Power Snap Plus, offer flexible sample throughputs and are upgrades over historical gel analyzers and E-Gel imagers, allowing faster setup, gel runs, and analysis. Both systems include:

  • Real-time visualization: Amber filter to monitor real-time sample migration
  • Sample safety: Blue-light transilluminator does not damage DNA samples
  • Intuitive interface: Easy operation with user-friendly touch screen and preset protocols
  • Flexible throughput: Gels with 11-, 22-, 48-, and 96-wells can be run (model-dependent)
  • High resolution camera for image capture, with image editing capabilities
  • Internal storage: Up to 3 months of experimental data can be stored in the device
  • Small footprint: 6x smaller than traditional gel documentation systems
