Hydrocarbons are organic compounds made up entirely of carbon and hydrogen atoms. Alkanes are the simplest organic compounds, having only single bonds between carbon atoms. They are referred to as saturated hydrocarbons and have the the general formula of CnH2n+2, where n is the number of carbon atoms. Alkenes have at least one carbon-carbon double bond and have the general formula CnH2n. Alkynes have one or more carbon-carbon triple bonds and have the general formula CnH2n-2. Alkenes and alkynes are called unsaturated hydrocarbons. Alkanes have the general formula of CnH2n+2, where n is the number of carbon atoms.
Hydrocarbons are non-polar compounds and are insoluble in water. They have low boiling and melting points. In general, alkanes and cycloalkanes have low reactivity and are used as solvents in organic chemistry. Natural gas, camping gas, lighter gas, and most gasolines are all alkanes. Alkenes and alkynes are more reactive than alkanes. Unsaturated compounds (with double or triple bonds) form addition and cycloaddition compounds, in which two substances combine to form a single substance.
