Antivirals for R&D in drug discovery

A broad selection of antiviral compounds

With the pharmaceutical industry in need of faster and more efficient ways to bring effective medicines to market, many drug developers are turning their attention to existing drugs as a starting point of their research, repurposing them for new therapeutic applications in several key fields, rather than starting the drug discovery process from scratch. As an example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a New York Times article from March 23, 2020, scientists have already identified some 70 known antiviral drugs to test against the novel Coronavirus, repurposing them to treat COVID-19 rather than trying to invent new molecular entities.

Within our Thermo Scientific portfolio, we offer a broad range of high-quality compounds with known antiviral properties, available off-the-shelf in a wide range of convenient pack-sizes. These can be used in drug discovery R&D as starting points for drug repurposing experiments, as analytical references in structural characterization or biological testing, or advanced building blocks in chemical synthesis.

A review from the American Society for Microbiology shows that a good number of these compounds have been used to treat viral illnesses, including influenza and HIV.
