No better time to react: Painting biomolecules with reactive fluorophores

The poster in the center of BioProbes 69 describes our extensive selection of reactive fluorophores for labeling antibodies, other proteins and peptides, small molecules, and oligonucleotides, along with some key examples of their use in FISH, immunocytochemistry, and flow cytometry. Hang this poster on your lab fridge, and your labeling options will be right where you need them.

The SpectraViewer tool takes a broader view

We are pleased to announce the release of the new and improved SpectraViewer tool. The updated SpectraViewer tool allows you to plot up to 14 fluorophores on a single graph, which you can then print, save, or export as a .txt file. Once you have selected fluorophores, you can easily generate a product list using the “Review Products and Purchase” button.

On each SpectraViewer graph, you can also designate as many as 7 laser lines and 10 or more excitation and emission filters. Furthermore, you can load preconfigured instruments, including lasers and filters, and save these specifications for later use. A spillover table option lets you view calculated overlaps with other spectra and filters. And unlike the original version, which only offered spectral data for Molecular Probes® fluorophores, the new SpectraViewer tool will continually be updated with as many spectra, instruments, and filters as possible.

Custom GeneArt services: From gene to purified protein in 30 business days

The GeneArt Genes-to-Protein Service provides you with an efficient and affordable option for outsourcing your protein expression and purification work. We employ the Expi293, FreeStyle 293, and CHO Expression Systems to rapidly produce proteins through transient expression in mammalian cells. These chemically defined systems use mammalian cells specially adapted for high-density, serum-free suspension culture. Mammalian expression systems facilitate proper protein folding and posttranslational modifications that may not occur in nonmammalian systems. We recommend you order an expression-optimized gene and let us clone it into one of our expression vectors, though we can also use your expression plasmid. The combination of gene expression optimization and advanced expression systems routinely leads to a high overall success rate and excellent protein yields.

To get started, download the Protein Production Request Form at from the GeneArt genes to proteins web page and email the completed form to geneartprotein@lifetech.com. Dedicated project managers will analyze the project according to your requirements and provide a quote and timeline within 2–3 business days. Depending on the gene length, the entire workflow from gene synthesis to purified protein is typically completed within 30 business days.

Cell health: What do you want to detect?

Molecular Probes reagents and assay kits let you validate your processes and help ensure that your experiment is on track. With the right probes, you can see how your cells are responding to changing conditions, follow key indicators of cell vitality, and ask the critical questions that move you on to the next experimental step.

Our online product selection guides help you select the right approach for your questions. Are my cells alive and proliferating? Are they performing basic functions? Are they healthy or stressed? To find the answer to each question, you are introduced to a choice of platforms, techniques, and approaches so that you can choose what works best in your experiment and in your lab. All of the options are presented with an integral bibliography so that you can browse publications and compare results as you go. Online guides are available for the following application areas:

  • Cell viability
  • Cell proliferation
  • Cell cycle
  • Cell tracking and tracing
  • Cytotoxicity
  • Endocytosis/phagocytosis
  • Oxidative stress and damage
  • Apoptosis
  • Autophagy
  • Mitochondrial function
  • Ion indicators
  • Immunofluorescence
