What is rabbit serum?

Rabbit serum is used in cell culture as a media supplement and can provide cells with proteins, hormones, nutrients, and other factors necessary for growth. Rabbit serum can be used as an alternative to FBS in some cell culture applications and is collected from animals typically six months old or younger. Gibco rabbit sera is processed and manufactured in the United States.

Rabbit serum uses

  • Rabbit serum can be used in antibody purification as a serum source for IgG binding proteins (A, G, and L).
  • As a blocking serum in immunocytochemistry and immunohistochemistry, rabbit serum is sometimes combined with BSA [1,2]. Thermo Fisher Scientific also offers normal rabbit serum tested for performance in a variety of immunoassays.

Rabbit serum quality testing

Each lot of rabbit serum is tested for its ability to support the growth of Sp2/O-Ag14 (murine myeloma) cells in control medium containing the test lot of serum. Results are compared to those obtained using control growth medium with a previously characterized reference serum.
