Volume III, Edition 6

Thermo Scientific™ Particulate Matter Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS), features a dual measurement method providing a true mass concentration traceable to NIST standards in meeting stringent accuracy requirements that facilitate successful audits and reduce regulatory risk. The PM CEMS utilizes the dilution-extractive method for wet stack applications to allow sample transport to occur under controlled temperature.

Consider these 5 tips and tricks to improve your particulate measurement on industrial applications to satisfy US EPA MACT's and the MATS with your Thermo Fisher Scientific Model PM CEMS:

What is the maintenance schedule for the PM CEMS?

fast5-one

Daily maintenance is accomplished through automated processes like a daily blowback schedule and the mass reference check. In-line filter replacements and TEOM filter replacement can be as infrequent as quarterly. Replacement of O-rings and other cleanings are semi-annual to annually.

How to increase accuracy by using light scattering and TEOM simultaneously

fast5-two

The TEOM is unaffected by changes in plant processes. When used together with the Nephelometer, the PM CEMS can provide accurate and continuous mass measurement results. The TEOM can provide daily true mass measurement reference results to compensate for any drift of the light scattering measurement.

How often should I calibrate the TEOM?

fast5-three

Calibration of the TEOM is not necessary. The tapered element's calibration constant can be verified through a process of using known weights and the element's natural frequency. The resulting calculated constant can be compared to the factory calibration constant to produce results within ±5%.

Can the mass concentration be traceable to NIST-standards?

fast5-four

The instrument will perform a scheduled daily mass referencing by transporting the particulate through the scattering stage to the TEOM where the inertial microbalance will scale the scattering response to a true mass measurement. The mass flow controllers are verified quarterly by using a NIST traceable or equivalent flow standard. Daily verification of the sample volume is performed by using an onboard sensor in the path of the sample flow channel following the sample mass flow controller.

How do you ensure that the PM CEMS will meet PS-11 requirements?

fast5-five

Following the proper installation and calibration requirements is essential to compliance of PS-11. After installation and initial calibration, allow the PM CEMS to operate in the stack for sufficient time for you to familiarize yourself with the operation of the PM CEMS and to gain an understanding of how the PM CEMS functions in your facility. The PM CEMS utilizes a number of automated functions, including instrument zero, upscale drift, and sample volume checks that can be used to ensure that the PM CEMS is operating properly and consistently.
